How fitting then, that I should end up sitting in one of these chairs, this time kind of cramped, low to the ground, and trying my best to settle in comfortably for the year-end student presentations that were about to take place. My disposition, making me aware and even mildly self-conscious of my adultness, was a detail I imagined not lost on Julie Laurin. As a sculptor and performance artist-in-residence facilitating a term-long creation workshop with one of the school’s grade 3 classes, Laurin’s work reflects the body’s relationship to spatial configurations and architecture, exploring how it informs our perceptions and movements. My placement, and this very location, would therefore have as much of an effect on the experience seeing the performances as the performances themselve.(...)
